What can really bind two people together in love? What is the true proof of belonging to each other? Social contract, corporal love or dependency on each other?
In the editorial department of a magazine, the chief editor, editor, coordinator, columnists, (all women), and the photographer and his model wife, are all trapped in marriage crisis. A woman in menopause, despite her middle-class upbringing, suffers from anxiety like a trapped animal; a young woman in her prime seizes other people’s relationships with extreme arrogance; and the past that has been collecting dust in people’s memories only reveals a family’s disgrace. Actions have consequences. The woman unwilling to be abandoned ends her own life to resolve the grievances buried deep in her heart, while the careless survivors whisper to one another like warblers, holding on to the remnants of love by defending and absolving it.
Zhao Mei borrows the verse "spring flowers falling from forest trees" from the opening of a famous poem from late 900 B.C. to capture the wisdom of its theme, “like water that will always flow east, there will always be regret.” Zhao Mei expresses the characters' emotions through stream of consciousness.
