Zhao Mei, born in 1954 of Manchurian ethnicity, is a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese literature.
To date she has published 32 novels (including THE WOMEN OF OUR CLAN, THE GARDEN OF ETERNAL SUNSHINE, AUTUMN DIES UPON WINTER and SLOWLY AS THE WATER FLOWS) and 19 compilations of prose and essays (including AN OPEN BOOK, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, and A JOURNEY OF DESIRE). She has also explored television, having penned the script for an 80-episode series based on the life of famed silent film era starlet Ruan LingYu.
Many of Zhao Mei’s works focus on women’s issues. Her two trilogies, “the trilogy of modern love” (including LOVERS IN HEAVEN, THE GARDEN OF PURPLE LAVENDERS, and LOVE AT THE END OF THE CENTURY) and “the trilogy of the Imperial Tang Dynasty” (including EMPRESS WU ZETIAN, PRINCESS GAO YANG, and SHANG GUAN WAN’ER) have had a profound influence upon their audiences and women’s literature in China. These two trilogies are considered Zhao Mei’s pivotal works.
Zhao Mei’s work has gained critical acclaim in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and she has garnered some of the most prestigious literary awards in China, including the LuXun Literature Award and the Zhuang ZhongWen Literature Award. Her novel THE GARDEN OF ETERNAL SUNSHINE and essay compilation AN OPEN BOOK were the 1994 bestsellers.
Zhao Mei is the head of the Writers’ Creative Studio, managing director of the Writers’ Guild of Tianjin, member of the Culture Research Institute and is currently serving her second term in the National Peoples’ Congress of China.
In 1994, Zhao Mei was invited by the U.S. Government to participate in the “International Visitor Program,” an international cultural exchange. She has been a guest-lecturer at Beijing University, FuDan University, NanKai University, Tianjin University, and China Northwest Normal University.

赵玫,满族,1954年生于天津,1982年毕业于南开大学中文系,现任天津市作家协会党组成员,第十届、第十一届全国人大代表,天津市人大代表,天津市文史研究馆馆员,中国作家协会全国委员会委员,天津市文学创作高级职称评审委员会评委,一级作家,国务院特殊津贴获得者。
